INTERVIEW WITH ASHLEY GORIS!!!
Hey pals! My latest interview is with the lovely Ashley Goris. We have known Ash for a few years now and she is absolutely killing it in the photography world. She has done numerous shoots for us and continues to impress and improve on her already captivating photography. Her list of clients includes Alkaline Trio, 3OH!3, Circa Survive, and many other amazing people/bands. Armed with a camera, sharp wit, and a vegan cookbook, Ashley is set to take over one click at a time.
THE FALL OF TROY

How did you did into the business of capturing moments in time?
I’ve always been the kid in class that would draw all over their math homework, and paint for fun. The only thing I loved more than drawing/painting/whatever other weird art form I’d come up with was music. Although I worked at a music store for years, for some reason I was never any good at guitar, drums, whatever. I wanted to become more involved in the music scene, but lacked musical talent, so I began taking photos for fun and ended up being pretty decent at it.
Was there a specific moment of enlightenment or shoot where you realized that photography is what you wanted to pursue?
ANDREW/FALL OF TROY

The first time I shot a show with my dslr was a Fall Of Troy show at Chain Reaction. One of my best friends (Holly) was on tour with them at the time and they suggested I take photos of the set. Afterwards I sent the photos to the guys, and Tim(former bassist) and Holly called me to tell me how impressed they were. I remember Tim telling me that this was what I “needed” to do with my life, and I guess I took him seriously.
Touching on the subject of bands, you have a fairly respectable list of clients that are musicians. It’s awesome looking at your portfolio and seeing the different shoots from these bands over the past couple of years. Do you have any favorites/best ones to work with/awesome stories from shoots?
FOXY SHAZAM

I think one of my favorite stories is when I was doing a shoot with Darkest Hour. They wanted to somehow form a human pentagram on the ground so I had to stand on top of suicide silence’s van. After we did a few photos the suicide silence guys started walking back to the van(I never had permission to stand on it, nor did I knew any of the dudes!). The Darkest Hour guys thought it would be amsuing to walk off and leave me on top of the van with no way to get down. It was kind of awkward trying to explain to the suicide silence guys how I got stuck on their van.
Thats awesome, Darkest Hour are a rad bunch of dudes. have you ever had any altercations with fans, securtity, etc. when shooting live at a show?
Haha yeah, they were some of my favorite dudes to work with.I was recently shooting the used in the photo barricade and some crowd surfing bozo(im stealing your word) kicked my camera into my face. I guess I’ve never really been in an altercation though.
Just abused, battered, and yelled at by fans.
What kind of set up do you use camera and accessory wise or is that like asking a magician to reveal his secrets?
I still use the same nikon d70 I started shooting with, although I want to upgrade by the end of the year. I have a few flashes I use as well, but it really depends on the location, how many members in the band, and how much set up time I have. Some of my best photos I took with just my d70 and 50mm lense.
STEPHEN CHOI/RX BANDITS

Do you prefer shooting bands/people or typical natural settings more? what are the advantages disadvantages to both?
I definitely prefer shooting people. Some photographers are naturally better at seeing a landscape and knowing how to really bring it to life in a photograph. Others are good at transcending an emotion through people. There arn’t really advantages and disadvantages. I wish I could take better landscape photos, but it just doesn’t click for me.
Doesn’t click for you. sweet pun, bro! What are some of your other hobbies outside of the lense (favorite bands, movies, etc.)
I know, after I wrote that I realized I was unintentionally being “punny”. I never know how to answer the “hobby” question. I guess I’m pretty boring, a fun day to me is reading a book or riding my bike. Although, I have recently became obsessed with vegan cooking.
That about wraps it up, any shoutouts, fuck you’s, etc. now is the time!!!
Not really, I guess I don’t really have any shout outs? Thanks to all the bands that have let me work with them over the years and especially Rockett.
There you have it. Great pics, great person.
